I produced my first wood-engraving at art college and have carried on engraving ever since both for illustration and editioned prints.

There have been countless engravers since Bewick's day and each one arrived at a characteristic way of making cuts rather as a fine hand identifies a writer. The tools have quaint names such as gravers, spitstickers and bull stickers and each one produces a unique cut. The best material for engraving on is Boxwood. It has a close, fine grain that may be cut in any direction and when new has a sheen like the best French-polished furniture.
